Sea to Sky Trail Update
The Sea to Sky Trail project is the execution of an epic vision to create an arterial multi-user trail for self propelled travel and recreation through the length of the Squamish Lillooet Regional District, from Horseshoe Bay to Lillooet. Well engineered & constructed and legitimately established on the land, the moderate grade of the trail (while optimized for mountain bikes) will provide a year-round world class amenity for a variety of users to enjoy.
The project has been undertaken by the Squamish Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) and is guided by a Steering Committee consisting of representatives from the communities of Squamish, Whistler && Pemberton, the SLRD, the local 1st Nations, the Ministry of Tourism Culture and the Arts, the Ministry of the Environment (Parks Department) and the Trans Canada Trail Foundation.
Phase 1, 180 kilometres from Squamish to D'arcy, is well underway. The route from Squamish to Whistler should see substantial completion by the end of 2009, with work north of Whistler starting in the summer of 2009. Phase 1 is projected to cost approximately $10 million, of which $2.5 million is currently secured.
Fundraising the balance for this ambitious venture is moving forward on a variety of fronts. The partners in this project are confident that the economic, social and environmental benefits inherent in this vision will lead to success in finding further financial support for this invaluable legacy.
